Bericht aus Sicht des MRFC
In great rugby conditions Munich played Mainz at home on Saturday. Munich were ready to continue from their last weekends form. When the captains met in the middle and the ref asked one of them to flip the coin, the Munich captain did the honours, even calling the flip, a decisive decision which set the tone for the game. Munich won the toss and decided to play with the wind for the first half and Mainz to kick off.
The referee signaled the start of play, Mainz kicked it deep, where one of the oldest players was talking to one of the newest players reliving the old glory days. Before either of them knew what was happening there was a knock on and Mainz had a scrum in a very good attacking position.
Like last week the Munich scrum had to look up to see their opponents when they set the first scrum, there was fierce competition in the front row with Mainz getting good early hits on the Munich pack. Munich managed to hold the initial onslaught, however as the game progressed the tides changed and once Munich’s front row warmed up it ended up being a repeat of last weeks dominance over the opposition.
The Munich back line led by the French revolutionary number 10 “Raymond” got their hands on the ball and displayed some impressive attacking moves gaining a lot of meters thanks to the open support play. The two Woodie brothers were again electrifying as they set new land speed records down the wing with Max scoring a well deserved try in the corner and unlucky not to score a double.
The Munich lineout applied a lot of pressure on Mainz in both offence and defense. The ever quiet Miget lead by example and inspired Nana to jump higher, thus allowing the lifters for once in a game some chance of being able to get him off the ground. Once in the air Nana managed to stretch out his big mitts and safely secure the ball from the opposition. Mainz determined not to let Munich show them up successfully defended the rolling maul to a point where Munich resorted to other tactics to get up the pitch.
A good hard contest was being played on the pitch with both sides throwing everything they had at each other including the Munich Captain sitting on one of the Mainz players legs accidently sending him off on a stretcher, obviously some more 3km time trials are needed there to ensure the safety of all players on the pitch.
As the game played on the Munich team tried not to give the ball to one of the oldest players, however it was inevitable and as usual after a couple of knock on’s he slid through the defense and scored a try making him the highest points score at the club. Cursing and cheering could be heard by the players and crowd.
The second half saw the Munich substitutes run on and make their mark on the game, most notably was the super glue on Hensel’s hands which prevented him on being able to pass the ball to supporting players. Mainz’s number 10 came alive in the second half making a mockery of the Munich defense dancing and stepping through the players, at one point he even managed time to stop and make a phone call to his family back in France.
With all of the weight on his shoulders the Captain was forced off the field with muscle cramps in his calves, which left 2 players in despair causing them to run into each other while trying to get back onside for a penalty. This left the photographers scratching their heads in amazement as these two experienced players were trying to pick themselves up off the floor.
2 More tries to Munich in the second half sealed the victory for the home team winning 34 to 0. Man of the Match going to Xavier, the Hammer to Quickie and Dick of the day to Kevin.
